Understanding PIN Security

A PIN (Personal Identification Number) is a numeric password used to authenticate users for bank cards, smartphones, door locks, and many other security systems. Unlike regular passwords, PINs are limited to digits only, making their security heavily dependent on randomness and proper length.

PIN Security by Length

  • 4-digit PIN: 10,000 possible combinations. Suitable for bank cards where attempts are limited (usually 3 tries).
  • 6-digit PIN: 1,000,000 possible combinations. Recommended for smartphones and digital accounts. 100x more secure than 4-digit PINs.
  • 8-digit PIN: 100,000,000 possible combinations. Maximum security for PINs. Ideal for high-value applications.

Most Common PINs to Avoid

Research shows that nearly 11% of all PINs are "1234". Avoid these commonly used PINs:

  • 1234, 0000, 1111, 2580 (vertical line on keypad)
  • Birth years (1990, 1985, etc.)
  • Repeated patterns (1212, 6969, 4444)
  • Sequential numbers (3456, 7890)

Our generator avoids all these patterns, creating truly random PINs that are impossible to guess.

Frequently Asked Questions - PIN Generator

Is a 4-digit PIN secure enough?

For bank cards with attempt limits (typically 3 tries before lockout), a random 4-digit PIN is adequate. For smartphones or digital accounts without attempt limits, use at least 6 digits.

What PINs should I avoid?

Avoid sequential numbers (1234, 4321), repeated digits (1111, 0000), birth years, and keypad patterns (2580). Our generator automatically creates PINs that avoid these weak patterns.

Should I use the same PIN for everything?

No. Use a unique PIN for each purpose (bank card, phone, door lock). If one PIN is compromised, your other accounts remain secure.

How do I remember multiple PINs?

Use a password manager to store your PINs securely. Most modern password managers support storing PINs alongside passwords and other credentials.
